Off to TEDxCERN

TEDxCERN 2014I last went to CERN back in 1996 (although it may have been late 1995) for an ADGE conference. I think that ADGE stood for "Autodesk Developer Group Europe", but the A might also have been for AUGI. Any old-timers out there who can confirm? (I'm sure Jeremy Tammik remembers. 🙂

Anyway, the ADGE conference that year was held at CERN, which was really cool. As part of the entertainment we had a tour around the facilities, including the accelerator complex – although some time before construction of the Large Hadron Collider was started.

So here I find myself about to head back there this afternoon for TEDxCERN. This will be my second TEDx event this year, having attended TEDxLausanne back in February. Understandably, given the location, today's programme looks to be a bit more "sciencey", which is great. And there are at least a couple of names I already know from the list of speakers, which is another good sign.

  1. Hi Kean, I don't think the "A" in ADGE ever stood for AUGI. I think you got it right: Autodesk Developer Group Europe. And if it was late 1995, AUGI was probably still NAAUG.

    1. Aha, thanks Scott.

A colleague (thanks, Becki!) just suggested "AutoCAD Development Group Europe" via LinkedIn, which has the ring of truth.

  2. Hi, I went to CERN to give an AutoCAD course for maintenance personnel, I think it was around 1999, because I remember one of my student proposed me to visit the LHC which was at the time still being built. So we went after the day's work inside the tunnel to visit the installation, I still remember the gigantic "magnets" (hundreds of tons I believe) my student advised me not to get too close to because of the remaining magnetic fields (even though of course the magnet was turned off)

  3. I'm pretty sure it was AutoCAD Developers Group Europe.

    1. That sounds right.

      Thanks!

  4. Hmm, tuned into the live stream right at the ending, some guy doing DJ mix with a choir of semi-dancing engineers behind him. Quite the nerds gone wild scene. Kean must dance too well because I did not see him on the floor.

    1. Oh man, you have no idea. You need to ask Stephen Preston about how crazy physicists can get. 😉

So yes, no dancing for me. Just observing from the sidelines, full of admiration.
