Did not arrive in London

Things were going so well on this year's DevDays tour. Then, as Jeremy reported on his blog, the best-laid plans of mice and men unravelled, thanks to the severe weather conditions that have been hitting the UK.

Despite the bad news in the weather, yesterday morning, I was still reasonably (foolishly?) optimistic about my own chances of getting to the UK: British Airways had declared my flight still to be operating – mainly as it was the return flight of one of the 4 short-haul flights planned to leave Heathrow yesterday.

Flight status before leaving for Heathrow

By the time I arrived at the airport, though, the flight had been cancelled, along with all others heading to Heathrow. Geneva airport was crowded with passengers trying to get on flights to the UK, so while I made some attempt to get online to rebook (and also left a message with our no-doubt overstretched, UK-based travel agent), I was pretty realistic about my chances of getting there.

I'd really been hoping to make it – despite the weather conditions – as most of the rest of the ADN team due to staff the event were already confirmed to be stuck in Milan until at least Monday morning. In the end our UK-based team members are having to battle on and deliver as much of the content as they can, although as the conditions don't appear any better, this morning, I'm wondering how many attendees will have actually made it to the event.

Looking on the bright side, I'm going to be able to spend some more time with my family on the lead up to Christmas, as well as reducing the risk of being stuck away from home for the holidays. Oh, and I'll be able to put the finishing touches on the matrix transformation application, to share that with you all in the next day or two.

  1. Hi Kean,
    I know what I am going to say has nothing to do with weather or airlines, but what can I do, I have a very interesting project in my mind and I was stuck on step one. For this I urgently need your help, I managed to get ACA 2011 working with VS 2010 Express (thanks to Jeremy's valuable posts), and started working on ACA.NET after watching your 2 web-casts. I am facing a problem with the Graph class when running AecWallSystemSampleMgd sample shipped with ACA 2011(see code below)

    Manager mgr = new Manager(db);
    Graph theGraph = mgr.FindGraph(wall);

    I am always getting null value for theGraph object, when I debug the mgr.GraphCount is always 0.

    I need the wall Joints,Sections and Connections to develop automatic details generation of ICF system.

    Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated and also if you have any resource regarding ICF wall system in ACA would be very helpful.

    Enjoy your flight!!

  2. Hi Ray,

    I have forgotten nearly everything I once knew about ACA (it has been 10 years ago since I worked with it).

    Please submit your question to ADN or to the relevant online discussion forum.

    Regards,

    Kean

  3. Hi Kean,

    sad, that you didn't made it to London. But getting more time with you family isn't bad either, isn't it?

    I just wanted to say thank you for everything I learned from you, be it coding Acad-Net or playing pool like last week in Munich. Your comments and suggestions on the DevLab really helped me a lot.

    I wish a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!

    Please, keep up your work!
    Regards
    René Andreas

  4. Hi René,

    You're quite right (and me being stuck in the UK for Christmas would not have been popular with my family, either :-).

    It was a pleasure to meet you in Munich!

    Check today's post for a tip you'll find of use (around the use of Win32's SetFocus() to avoid that mouse click).

    All the best to you and your family for the festive season,

    Kean
