I was just sent this short video that captures the essence of the Dreamcatcher project beautifully. Be sure to check it out if you're interested in what Autodesk Research is up to in the field of generative design. You won't regret it.

Exciting stuff!

That kind of design tweaking is interesting as its all controlled by the boundary conditions set up by some engineer. There is a civil engineering version of that called SiteOps, and when you learn it you realize it is only suitable for very specific situations. Of course, the sales guys do not mention that, so I end up continually re-educating people they talked to on why engineers are not about to be replaced. So this subject of having the computer try things must be balanced by oversight of someone who understood the automation going on. Cool to see cases where it can be applied . I'm kind of wondering about making stuff that is all freeform though. That guy with the quadcopter just happened to have a high end 3d printer (not fdm) hanging around? Also, connectors tend to be as expensive as the struts involved on truss structures, so curious to see examples of lots of little pieces being more cost effective. Post em if you run across them pls! thx

You can't do this without additive manufacturing that's largely inaccessible to most of us, today... one of the reasons Autodesk is investing in that area, to enable generative design to work properly.

This is largely a vision of the future: the Airbus A320 partition was manufactured in lots of smaller parts, but one day...

I think it would be very interesting to combine generative design with perhaps reinforcement machine learning.

Absolutely! I've just received another video that underlines that opportunity (I'll post it next week).
