  • My generative design presentation from SDSC-Connect 2020 and a teaser for AU 2020

From one online conference to another. Here's the recording published by the Swiss Data Science Center for last week's SDSC-Connect event. I've set it to start at the beginning of my session – which in 30 minutes takes a whirlwind look at four generative design projects run by Autodesk Research – but the other sessions are also likely to be of interest to people, so feel free to scrub backwards! Next week I'll be busy recording my AU 2020 session and finishing up the handout. Here's a teaser for this year's all-digital event: I'm supposed to be on holiday, this…

  • Adding building systems to Dasher’s 2D heatmaps

As a recap, so far in this series we've looked at creating 2D heatmaps, making them resizable, adding lots of them inside Project Dasher, and then making them pinnable per-level. There are two main tasks left for the completed feature – which will form the core of my upcoming class for AU2020 – which are to add information on building systems and to implement a UI to make these new views easier to access. Today we're focusing on adding building system information. Let's first step back and talk about why this is important… One of the key insights we've derived…

  • Register now for Autodesk University 2020!

It's been a crazy year, but there's comfort to be had in certain things going ahead despite the craziness. For me Autodesk University is one of these things: my first AU was back in the year 2000, and I've probably only missed a few in the last two decades. This year's AU experience will be 100% virtual but also 100% free, so I'm really excited that so many more people will be able to experience AU! As of Wednesday, registration is now open for this year's AU. It's quick and easy – no need to fill out credit card details…

  • Dreaming of AU and Forge Accelerators

This has been a strange week, at least in terms of dreams. I mentioned earlier in the week (on Twitter and LinkedIn) that I'd had a dream about Autodesk University where I was only partially present: I was running between meetings while everyone else was having fun attending sessions and hanging out at social events. I also noted this wasn't so very different from reality (at least the way I perceive it), but that's just me playing the victim. I love AU even if it's always a bit hectic. I have a feeling this dream was probably triggered by last…

  • AEC Hackathon, CanBIM recordings & AU class voting

This post is a bit of a grab-bag of various event-related topics. The first one (chronologically, if not in terms of the title above) is the availability of session recordings from the recent CanBIM event: "The Future of Work: Designing Resiliency and Building Work Safety Post-COVID". My own session was entitled "Using Generative Design and Digital Twins to Improve Occupant Well Being". As it was the first session of the day – with a new web streaming platform – there were a few teething issues for the sponsor's introduction (and the session auto-closed a little too promptly, which meant no…

  • The Autodesk University 2020 proposal deadline is coming fast!

I've just realised that time is running out for people to submit their class proposals for AU 2020. The deadline is on June 22nd, which is this coming Monday. From my side I'm almost certainly going to submit a class to discuss the details of the work we've been doing on post-COVID return-to-workplace efforts. Essentially digging into how we've used the Space Analysis package to implement metrics that make sense for this type of analysis. If you're thinking of submitting something, but haven't yet put pen to paper (or rather fingers to keyboard), then I suggest giving it some thought…

  • Autodesk University goes fully digital in 2020

Yesterday Lisa Campbell, Autodesk's Chief Marketing Officer, announced the decision to move all this year's Autodesk University events to a fully digital platform: this makes a lot of sense given the ongoing uncertainty around the duration and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's going to change the shape of AU for many of us, inevitably, but I'm looking forward to these events, nonetheless. For one thing it means I'm going to be able to attend – or even participate in – more of them, with less impact on my family and the planet. I'm also really curious to see how…

  • Visiting post-Brexit, pre-AU London

After a couple of interesting days in Berlin, last week – which for now I'm not going to talk about in detail, maybe another time – I've come across to the UK. This is my first trip since the UK formally left the EU, even if it's still part of the customs union for the remainder of the year. I feel very strongly that this is a bad thing for the country – and for the world – but there you go. There's nothing to be gained by dwelling on it. Yesterday morning I headed to Battersea to visit the…

  • Geometry Systems and the Refinery Primer

I mentioned last time that I was expecting to publish some posts about Autodesk University 2019 material I found particularly compelling (now that I've had the chance to consume some). I didn't get to watch as many recordings as I'd have liked – for now – but I did manage to watch the rest of a class of which I only caught the first few minutes before having to run to another meeting in Las Vegas, my friend Lorenzo Villaggi's session on Geometry Systems. There are two main pieces to generative design systems – at least in the way they're…

  • My AU 2019 classes

The Autodesk University elves have been working day and night over the last few weeks to prepare 674 AU class recordings for posting to web. Some of my classes were livestreamed, this year, so I have already posted recordings for these. This post is just me gathering the various recordings together in a single post. Before that, though, I did promise a festive photo for each of the coming posts. Here's one I took this morning, when we woke to find that St Nicholas had passed by the house. The feast of St Nicholas – which is celebrated throughout much…
