The Localization Services team at Autodesk – many of whom also work from our office in Neuchâtel – has launched a "crowdsourced" translation platform: the Autodesk Collaborative Translation Platform. This mechanism is intended to allow members of the Autodesk community to help us translate our software into different languages. The first project being hosted on the platform is for the Russian version of Homestyler. To participate in this project, you need to be over 18, proficient in Russian and in possession of an Autodesk ID. For other information on the platform, see the FAQ. This is really an exciting development,…

While I'm working through the inevitable backlog of tasks that build up during a 2-week vacation, I thought I'd post something quickly about some of the events of the last fortnight. I'll get back on with AU preparation and related technical posts later this week, I hope. Firstly, a few people have asked me about our trip to Egypt. We spent the first big chunk of our holiday at the beach, relaxing, snorkelling and scuba-diving. I actually stayed away from any kind of electronic communication for the whole time we were in El Quseir: the only news that managed to…

I arrived back home on Sunday afternoon from a really fun event: Autodesk Europe's annual 7-a-side football (i.e. soccer) tournament. This year it was held in Verona, Italy, which was a comfortable 5-6 hour drive from my home near Neuchâtel. This year I played for a team made up of employees from Autodesk's Global Services (to which ADN belongs) and Worldwide Marketing teams (two teams ended up being combined as both were a little short on players). Here's the pre-tournament team photo: The players (from left-to-right and back-to-front): Kean Walmsley, Jason Summerfield, Jeremy Tammik, Fenton Webb, Gary Wassell, Marat Mirgaleev,…

I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the Autodesk developer blogosphere to Doug Redmond, who has recently started a blog focused on programming and administering Autodesk Vault, It's All Just Ones and Zeros. Doug is a long-time contributor to Autodesk's development community, whether helping my team deal with complex API issues or presenting the Vault API at ADN events and at AU, he has a boundless passion for helping people customizing and developing with Autodesk Vault. If you're interested in working deeply with Vault technology – or are already doing so – then I'm sure that Doug's blog will…

In today's post I thought I'd quickly mention a couple of useful resources. The first is the newly made-over Autodesk Labs site. You'll find lots of cool, new technology hosted on the site, including – in the next month or so – the ADN Plugin of the Month, as mentioned in this previous post. The Labs site is well worth checking out: there's plenty there that's genuinely useful as well as stuff that's just plain fun to play around with. 🙂 The second resource is our online documentation portal. This includes online product documentation (via the "online help" links) for…

This is the fourth and final part of the series documenting my recent interview with John Walker. Where the first three parts looked at the early history of the company, the architectural evolution of AutoCAD and its APIs and Autodesk's strategy and eco-system, this part takes a look at past and future business opportunities for the company. I have not linked to terms previously linked to in the first part of the series, which should also be referred to for typographical conventions, if they're not clear. Part 1 - Autodesk's early history Part 2 - AutoCAD's architecture & APIs Part…

This is the third part of the series documenting my recent interview with John Walker. Where the first part looked at the early history of the company and the second looked at the architectural evolution of AutoCAD and its APIs, this part focuses on Autodesk's business strategy and focus on its eco-system. I have not linked to terms previously linked to in the first part of the series, which should also be referred to for typographical conventions, if they're not clear. Part 1 - Autodesk's early history Part 2 - AutoCAD's architecture & APIs Part 3 - Autodesk's eco-system and…

On Thursday of last week (September 4th, 2008, for those people accessing this post sometime in the distant future :-), I had the great honour of meeting with John Walker, one of Autodesk's founders and its former CEO. I've known for some time that John lives in the Neuchâtel area, and it turns out he lives just 10 minutes' drive from my home. I decided quite recently to get in touch with John and suggest I interview him for this blog, and I was delighted when he accepted. Not only was John very generous with his time - we talked…

Autodesk has a wide range of products that expose Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), to the point that it can be a bit overwhelming for developers new to our products. A great place to look for introductory information around developing with Autodesk software is the Developer Center on Autodesk.com: http://www.autodesk.com/developer From here you will be able to navigate to individual Developer Centers for a number of our products, some of which I've provided direct links to below: http://www.autodesk.com/developautocad (AutoCAD) http://www.autodesk.com/developadt (Architectural Desktop) http://www.autodesk.com/developrevit (Revit) http://www.autodesk.com/developmap (Map 3D) http://www.autodesk.com/developmapguide (MapGuide) http://www.autodesk.com/developinventor (Inventor) http://www.autodesk.com/developvault (Vault) http://www.autodesk.com/developdwf (DWF Toolkit) http://www.autodesk.com/developbuzzsaw (Buzzsaw) Each of these…
