There's a series of webinars starting next week that will help you get a grip on what's coming with various Autodesk platforms, both cloud-based and desktop. It's also a chance to catch up on some of the content that was presented at last year's DevCons. All the below webinars start at the same time: 8am PST | 11am EST | 4pm GMT | 5pm CET. Don't worry if that time's inconvenient, recordings will be made available soon after the webinars are finished. Please note that while some of the sessions (the last three in the below list) require Autodesk Developer…

Some of you may have heard about the launch of a new Autodesk product, last week, that's focused on generating interactive 3D environments from Revit models. It's called Autodesk LIVE and is part of the Autodesk LIVE Design umbrella (at least I think I have that the right way around). Autodesk LIVE Design is all about making it easier to apply best-in-class visualization technology from our Media & Entertainment division – who collectively know a few things about high-end rendering and animation, admittedly – to the world of design and engineering. Here's a video describing how Autodesk LIVE –…

There's still time to participate in the Autodesk Exchange Apps Hackathon, a virtual event taking place this weekend (September 20-21). The point of this event is to encourage developers to post apps to the Autodesk Exchange Apps store, and we're even paying cool, hard cash ($50 or $100, whether free or paid) for each app that gets published. Presentations and discussions will include: How to architect your app for Exchange: How to build your AutoCAD® app How to build your Autodesk® Revit® app How to build your Autodesk® Inventor® app How to build your Autodesk® 3ds Max® and Autodesk® Maya®…

I saw an announcement for this competition back at Autodesk University 2013, but haven't yet posted about it on this blog. The competition is now in its final stages – the deadline is on March 26, 2014 at 10am PST – but that means exactly 9 days left to enter from the time this post goes live. The concept is simple: you have to use one of three Autodesk products – Inventor, Showcase or 3ds Max – to create a rendering of the Morgan 3 Wheeler to be published as an advertisement in MOG Magazine. Aside from installing one or…

Regular readers of this blog may have followed the development of this plugin, but I've written this post is to announce its availability more officially (in addition to Scott's post from last week). TransTips uses the Bing Translator web service to translate tooltips into one of 36 languages on-the-fly, as they are displayed by AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, 3ds Max and the products based upon them. The 36 languages are those currently supported by the Bing Translator service: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian,…

After adding Revit and then Inventor support to the original AutoCAD application, it made sense to go ahead and include support for 3ds Max. Here's a solution supporting these four products (and their verticals). And I can now confirm that a version of this application will be September's Plugin of the Month on Autodesk Labs. You may have noticed a lot of UI consistency introduced across these Autodesk products, in recent years, mainly due to a coordinated push from our product teams for a more consistent user experience. An internal acronym was used for the project driving consistency across these…

Some of you may have seen the point cloud tool for 3ds Max and 3ds Max Design posted on Autodesk Labs. This plugin currently works with points defined in an ASCII format, although I expect in time it will support similar formats to those supported by AutoCAD. In case you're interested in bringing point cloud files that intended for – or generated/edited by – this tool into AutoCAD, I thought I'd share a quick tip. You can use the TXT2LAS tool – which I've used extensively in my efforts to bring point clouds into AutoCAD from Photosynth and Photofly –…

While my blog is mostly for people working with our more horizontal "CAD" products, I expect there may be a few readers out there developing applications for some of our "Media & Entertainment" products, too. So, as last year, here are the links to the API wishlist surveys we've just published for these products: Autodesk® Maya® Autodesk® 3ds Max® The surveys will be live until July 1st, 2010. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to provide our Engineering teams with this valuable feedback!
