Training

Just a quick reminder about the DevLabs my team is running, the first of which is being held next week in our UK office. Here's some additional information that was sent out in a recent technical newsletter for ADN members: If you don't have time to attend a training class, but you value the opportunity to work on your code with the help of an Autodesk expert, then DevLab is for you. Bring your laptop to our FREE DevLab and work on your code as you normally – the difference is that you have a team of DevTech experts (the…

I've been a bit remiss posting on our plans for this year's AU. At AU 2007 and 2008 my team organised and ran a separate Developer Track. Last year we had already hoped to fold our classes into the Customization & Programming track – mainly to avoid confusion from AU attendees - but it didn't quite happen. This year it finally has. Here are the tracks that we would probably have gathered under the Developer Track umbrella, if we were managing it in the same way this year. You will find them all in the AU Online voting system under…

My team is trying out a new concept over the coming months, something we're calling DevLabs. The idea is that we schedule a period where members of my team are available in a particular Autodesk office to sit down with people working on their development projects. (The concept is new for us, at least: I know Google does something similar with their Hackathons.) Attendees can plan on dropping in for a just a day or for longer – even the whole week, if they so choose - to spend time working through development issues with members of my team. This…

This post is a miscellaneous update on things I've put off announcing because of all the fun I've been having with AutoCAD 2010's Overrule API. First up is the AutoCAD Exchange, a new site devoted to people working with, you guessed it, AutoCAD. It's stocked with lots of useful and fun content, as well as providing social networking capabilities (be sure to add me as a contact via the Networking area of the site). Next is Without a Net, a blog hosted by an old friend of mine, Tom Stoeckel, along with esteemed colleagues Tom Bradley and Dan Scales. They…

The recordings from our recent DevDays Online events, covering API-related information about much of the 2010 family of products, are now available: AutoCAD download (27.3 Mb) AEC download (47.5 Mb) Geospatial download (14.6 Mb) Manufacturing download (27.0 Mb) Civil 3D download (14.2 Mb) Enjoy! 🙂

Another first for my team... a few months prior to a new release of our various products we typically travel the world to tell ADN members about the new product and API features these products will (probably) contain. This year we presented to upwards of 1400 people in 21 cities around the world. Due to the early nature of the information the events on this tour are only open to ADN members and people who have signed a non-disclosure agreement. This year, we've decided also to present many of the DevDays tour sessions online - at no cost - to…

This is likely to be somewhat "off-topic" for the majority of this blog's readership, but anyway, here goes. (It turns out an increasing number of traditional CAD customers are making use of adjacent visualization applications, so I'm sure there are some people out there who will find this of interest... 🙂 Many of you have probably heard (or read) me mention, by now, that my team (DevTech) is responsible for providing a variety of technical services for members of the Autodesk Developer Network (ADN). What many of you may not know is that this covers pretty much all Autodesk's "platform"…

MI can safely say that this was my most enjoyable (and exhausting) Autodesk University so far. This post contains a "blow by blow" account of my involvement in this year's event, to give a feel for what it was like (from my perspective, at least). Monday Before AU proper I attended two great events: our ADN conference - attended by upwards of 400 people - and Autodesk's inaugural Design Computation Symposium. I found it very interesting to see some of the capabilities of algorithmic design, an area I've started to get involved in and a theme that continued during the…

There's just one week to go before this year's Autodesk University. If you need more accuracy than this Shaan's here to help. 🙂 I'm going to be pretty busy with last-minute (well, last-week) preparation for the event, but will try to post the odd item of interest. For those of you who won't be in Vegas for AU 2008, please do keep checking this blog: I expect to keep posting during the course of the week which will hopefully prove to be of interest whether you were able to attend or not. One month ago I mentioned an AU Unplugged…

A couple of posts on other blogs that may be of interest to this blog's readership: CAB Files Present vs. CAB Files Future: over on Beyond the Paper, Volker Joseph raises the possibility of Autodesk Design Review moving from a simple CAB distribution model to one which would allow installation of pre-requisite modules (presumably such as the .NET Framework), which would result in a larger distribution. If you have an opinion - one way or another - on this topic, please post a comment on Volker's blog. Autodesk Developer Network (ADN): Support and Expertise from Concept to Market: over on…
