  • So far it's been a great few days in Montreal at this year's Autodesk Tech Summit. The event just keeps getting bigger: we're now up to 750 attendees over a 3-day conference with around 150 speakers. I spoke on the first day about using the View & Data API to enable VR – something I'll be talking about again at the Forge DevCon, for external attendees. I'm happy with how the session went – it was a fun crowd. Here's a selfie posted by a couple of people who came along… The rest of the day was spent in other…

  • Some quick updates to round off the week… Firstly, a couple of "calls for proposals" have just gone out. Autodesk University 2016 is once again being held in Las Vegas, but this year it'll be earlier than usual: rather than being held right after Thanksgiving, it's now the week before, from November 15-17, 2016. This is going to be a welcome change for all US-based presenters, in that they can deliver their classes at AU and then take a well-deserved Thanksgiving break rather than spending it making last-minute changes to their slide decks and demos. If you're interested in presenting…

  • Autodesk is holding its first Autodesk Forge Accelerator from March 14-18, 2016 in San Francisco. I say it's the first, but it's really a rebranding of the Autodesk Cloud Accelerators that were held earlier this year to have the same moniker as the recently announced developer platform, fund and conference. The "call for proposals" started just before the holiday break, and will remain open until January 31, 2016. So there are just over 3 weeks left to submit your sub-2,000 word proposal on how you intend to use an Autodesk web-service API during the accelerator. These currently include View &…

  • We're about halfway through the first Cloud Accelerator Extension being held in the incredible city of Prague. The entire European ADN team is in town – so a great chance to catch up with old friends such as Jeremy, Adam, Philippe, Cyrille and Peter – along with cloud-focused developers from Norway, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Romania, Italy, Greece, Israel and (of course) the Czech Republic. So definitely making new friends, too. 🙂 I'm mainly here to help developers working with AutoCAD I/O – gathering feedback for the development team, in the process – and it's really great…

  • There's another online Hackathon in town, this time for Fusion 360. It's running from September 23 to October 30, 2015, so a reasonable period during which you can create your first Fusion 360 app using JavaScript, Python or C++. I don't know much about Fusion 360 development, but I'm looking forward to learning more during this event. This is a great chance to start working early on with one of Autodesk's hottest new platform technologies. And to get Autodesk not only to help you with your development, but also to compensate you for your efforts! (You can receive $500 if…

  • Last week I was in Singapore for our annual, internal, two-day technical summit. Upwards of 500 members of Autodesk's various engineering and technical teams gathered together at the iconic Marina Bay Sands for the event. The hotel was pretty amazing. Having been told my room number (4619), I first exited the elevator at the 4th floor. It's only then that I realised the rooms on each floor were numbered in double digits, and so my room was on the 46th! While I didn't end up making much use of the hotel's facilities – aside from the conference centre, of course…

  • The countdown for Autodesk University 2015 starts with the Call for Proposals opening on April 22nd. It will remain open until May 26th. I have a few ideas for possible topics to present at this year's event… Virtual Reality using Autodesk's View & Data API Developing JavaScript applications for AutoCAD using TypeScript Processing drawings in the cloud using AutoCAD I/O They all seem to be valid topics, but we'll see if I can find the energy and motivation to submit all three. If you have an opinion on what you'd like to hear me talk about – even if you…

  • I'm making the most of a late flurry of snow in the alps, this week, finishing up the winter season on the slopes with my family. And I'm going from the snow to the sun next week, as I head across to Singapore for some internal planning meetings. I do expect to blog pretty much as usual, during the course of these two weeks, though (I've still got too much to talk about regarding AutoCAD 2016, for one thing). A topic that I wanted to share today is regarding a MOOC I'm currently following via edX. It started last week…

  • I mentioned this event – an excellent opportunity to kickstart your web or mobile application development efforts – late last year. The original submission deadline was last week, but this has been extended to January 17 – the end of this week! If you can put together a proposal (which shouldn't be more than 1,000 words) by then, you may still be able to participate. As a reminder, Autodesk is hosting the 2-week workshop in our downtown San Francisco offices from March 9-20, and will pay the hotel costs for 1-2 people per company. Get more information here.

  • Autodesk's Cloud Platforms team is running an interesting "incubator" program to encourage software developers to create applications that leverage Autodesk's PaaS layer. (This currently includes the View & Data, AutoCAD I/O, Autodesk Fusion 360, Autodesk BIM 360 and Autodesk ReCap 360 web-service APIs.) I won't go into the details – you can get them here – but I will call out the important points as I see them. 2 weeks of working on your cloud-integrated app in Autodesk's San Francisco office March 9-20, 2015 Autodesk experts on hand to help Open to all, but there's limited capacity 14 companies will…
