  • Autodesk University 2015 class proposals

A reminder that proposals are open for AU2015 until May 26th. I've just submitted two, myself. Of the three topics I had in mind – relating to VR, AutoCAD I/O and TypeScript – I decided to submit proposals on the first two: I'll do my best to use TypeScript for one or both of the other two (assuming they get accepted) which will at least give people some exposure to how the technology works. And give some good fodder for blog posts, of course. Here are the abstracts I submitted: Virtual Reality viewing of 3D models using Autodesk's View and…

  • Puzzling over laser cutters

After introducing a rudimentary program to help build jigsaw puzzles, we needed to fabricate the design in some way. As mentioned originally, we quickly discarded the idea to 3D print it as too time-consuming and unreliable: we decided to at least investigate using a laser cutter, what I considered to be a more natural choice for this. Now I did have some experience of using the laser cutter at our local Fab Lab, but as we wanted to iterate quickly – and didn't have the fixed requirement of the larger cutting bed – we opted to use a slightly smaller…

  • AU2015 Call for Proposals opens next week

The countdown for Autodesk University 2015 starts with the Call for Proposals opening on April 22nd. It will remain open until May 26th. I have a few ideas for possible topics to present at this year's event… Virtual Reality using Autodesk's View & Data API Developing JavaScript applications for AutoCAD using TypeScript Processing drawings in the cloud using AutoCAD I/O They all seem to be valid topics, but we'll see if I can find the energy and motivation to submit all three. If you have an opinion on what you'd like to hear me talk about – even if you…

  • Morgan at the Geneva Motor Show 2015

I headed over to Geneva yesterday afternoon for the first press day of this year's Geneva Motor Show. I was there courtesy of our friends at the Morgan Motor Company who launched their new Aero 8 (it was actually nice being there as a guest, in contrast to last year's collaboration). Here's the launch video for this exciting car: I love this video, but I did have one minor gripe for the Morgan team: why was Jon Wells, Morgan's Head of Design, shaving a piece of clay rather than using Autodesk tools to develop the design? I was joking –…

  • Using NFC to launch your Google Cardboard app

When I first got my Google Cardboard toolkit – in my case the DODOcase VR Toolkit V1 – I was fascinated by the NFC tag that came with it. I hadn't really played with NFC, prior to that, and only had a very vague idea of what it was about. It turns out that NFC is this important new(ish) technology that's enabling all kinds of local (hence "near-field") communications. Especially, it seems, in the area of mobile payments with technologies such as Apple Pay. Anyway, my first exposure to NFC was via this business card-sized sticker that came in the…

  • Project Memento v1.10.12.1

The Memento product got some well-deserved airtime at Autodesk University 2014: it had prominent mentions during both the opening and closing keynotes. A new version has now been pushed live to Autodesk Labs and comes with some really useful enhancements. Full details can be found on Scott's blog. I'll start by talking about three enhancements I made use of for a specific project. My goal was to take some OBJ files – which had previously been generated from photos and exported by Memento – and set the coordinate system correctly for viewing in A360. Well, for use with the View…

  • Autodesk University 2014: Day 3

Autodesk University 2014 ended really well on Thursday. Despite me nearly showing up late for my final speaking engagement (I somehow had it in my head that it started at 1:30pm rather than 1:00pm – thankfully I chose to show up 32 minutes early!), the session itself went very well. It was the only one of my sessions that ended up being recorded (it wasn't about AutoCAD, at all – it was all about the Geneva Motor Show project which was implemented using Autodesk VRED), and it was a fun one. The final keynote was, once again, very inspiring. Amar…

  • Autodesk University 2014: Day 2

It's suddenly Thursday morning. I feel like I've been in one of those hyperlapse videos since my last blog post. Here's a quick update on what I've been up to. When I wrote my last post I was actually sitting in on Albert Szilvasy's AutoCAD I/O session. This very interesting class was recorded so be sure to watch it when it comes online. From there I headed to the Exhibit Hall. This year the Exhibit Hall at AU is just incredible. I don't know what's changed, exactly, but I just love the way it's been laid out. And I've really…

  • Autodesk University 2014: Day 1

It's Tuesday afternoon and we're just one day into the main AU 2014 event. Yesterday's pre-conference event was the ADN DevDay. It was nice to see my old team (although there were quite a few new faces since I was part of it) take to the stage in a room that was pretty much packed to capacity: During his keynote our SVP of Industry Strategy and Marketing, Andrew Anagnost, talked about the upcoming business model transformation from perpetual to term-based licensing. Then followed a number of technical presentations about Autodesk's PaaS layer – especially the View & Data API –…

  • Autodesk University 2014 live online + my class schedule

Even if you weren't able to make it across to Las Vegas for AU, this week, then you can still attend the opening keynote, innovation forums, closing session and a number of key classes via live streaming video. Apparently an additional 200+ classes will be recorded for AU Online, but I don't know which – if any – of mine will be. Here are links to the events/sessions in which I'm participating in some way, should you want to check out the posted handouts, samples and presentations. I've put them in chronological order, so people lucky enough to be here…
